 While in college at Ohio State Schmidt played 1st baseman. In the 1971 draft he was selected by the Phillies. He would stay there his entire career. 1974 was Mike's breakout year. He won a batting title that year. During the 1976 season Schmidt won his first of ten gold gloves.

 In 1980 he was named the NL MVP. That same season the Phillies won their first World Series. The next season he would win the MVP award again. In 1986 he would win again. In 1989 Schmidt decided to retire from baseball. He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1995.
